Launch of Carrera Solar Atacama 2018

Carrera Solar Atacama returns with its most extreme challenge yet

On 5th June, La Ruta Solar will launch the 5th version of the race with an exciting new route that will traverse more than 2600 kilometres.

A CHALLENGE LIKE NEVER BEFORE – This was La Ruta Solar’s objective from the moment it began planning the upcoming version of Carrera Solar Atacama, which in October of this year, will take place between Santiago and Arica.

LAUNCH EVENT – On Tuesday 5th June, marking World Environment Day, La Ruta Solar will announce the new route spanning more than 2600 kilometres, as well as the official list of teams representing seven different countries, including Chile. The ceremony, that will take place at the Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda (Plaza de la Ciudadanía 26, Santiago underneath Palacio La Moneda), will include the participation of Chilean Government authorities, and the exhibition of solar and hybrid vehicles that competed in previous versions of the race.

THE MOST EXTREME RACE YET – The 1st Carrera Solar Atacama was held in 2011 over 3 days of competition, with a route of 1060 kilometres that passed through the Tarapacá and Antofagasta regions. This year’s event, the 5th version of the race, will traverse throughout all of northern Chile over 8 days, and is therefore the most challenging ecological rally to ever take place in Latin America. Extreme temperatures and steep hills are just some of the challenges that teams will face in October as they adventure through the most arid desert in the world, where strategies to maximise the efficient use of energy will be key to arriving in Arica.
